Guided Hiking Tours

Montenegro | Montenegro Trek

Trek the Black Mountain wilderness and enjoy the stunning Adriatic Sea.

  • "The countryside is spectacular, unspoiled, and uncrowded. Like Switzerland before it was tamed. Rugged mountains arising out of the Adriatic. Fiords and ancient coastal villages. The Tara River, with its steep canyon walls. An unforgettable night at the Eco Katun, sitting outside by the fire and seeing billions of stars. Plus it was fun to hike again with Kenny, and to hike for the first time with Terese."- Don Ware

Trip Highlights:

  • Hiking through three national parks, Biogradska Gora National Park, Durmitor National Park and Lovcen National Park.
  • Boating on the Tara River through the deepest canyon in Europe.
  • A sampling of everything Montenegro has to offer, from picture-perfect coastlines and mountains, to tucked-away seaside villages.

Montenegro, the “Black Mountain.” The very name evokes a sense of mystery and intrigue in a far-away place. Tucked neatly into the Adriatic Coast, this fascinating gem has it all—sapphire colored lagoons; rugged mountain peaks; an extraordinary coastline; fjords and deep canyons; breath-taking flora, abundant wildlife and elegant seaside villages with architecture reminding visitors of Venice. Montenegro is a small country, but its beauty, wilderness and adventure make a lasting impression on all who visit.

You’ll taste every Adriatic delight during our 8 day hiking tour of Montenegro. This inn-to-inn trek begins at an upscale hotel in the mountain resort of Kolasin, and continues into Biogradska Gora National Park. The national park has been under protection since 1878 and is one of the few remaining primeval forests in Europe. You’ll hike to vast pastures above tree line and view six glistening lakes. Visit Biogradska Jezero, the national park’s namesake lake, and ascend its highest peak (summit optional) to enjoy mountaintop panoramas of the surrounding landscape.

Continue with a day trip on the Tara River into the deepest canyon in Europe. One of Europe’s most pristine and wild rivers, the Tara River is a UNESCO Ecological Reserve. Your boat ride carries you into Durmitor National Park, which, due to the relative inaccessibility, remains mostly untouched.

Embark on a loop-hike through the national park, and explore a mountainous region with fantastic geologic formations. Snap photos of a famous mountain peak, Bobotov Kuk (8,278 feet/2,523 meters). Transfer through the beautiful and mountainous countryside to Kotor, a town nestled on the Boka Kotorska gulf. Here you will see a unique natural fjord on the Mediterranean coast. Your guides will pick a hike to the villages of Risan and medieval Perast, and if time allows, you’ll take a boat to the small islands just offshore.

The final day takes you around the Bay of Kotor. Strike forth with excitement on one of the many hiking trails leading to Lovcen National Park. Drink in the views of the entire Adriatic before transfering to seaside Budva, your final destination on this magical hiking tour.

Trip Itinerary

Travel independently by air to Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital. Proceed to Kolašin by shuttle or taxi, which we would be happy to arrange for you. Meet group for welcome drinks and dinner at an upscale Resort & Spa.

From the hotel, we’ll hike into the Biogradska National Park. Nestled within the Bjelasica mountain range, the massif dominates north-eastern Montenegro with 10 grand peaks higher than 6,562 feet/2,000 meters, and at its heart has one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests. You will walk across beautiful pastures and meadows teeming with wildflowers before reaching a traditional alpine farm turned ecological resort, the Eco Katun, where we will make ourselves comfortable and spend the night in one of their authentic wooden huts.

After breakfast at Eco Katun, we head out on a circular tour of the highest area of the national park. If the weather permits, an ascent of “Ogorela Glava”, a mountain just shy of 6,562 feet/2,000 meters is an option. We will have a marvelous panorama of the national park before heading into the primeval forest that this area is so famous for and proceed by descending to the beautiful Lake Biograd (Biogradsko Jezero), the park’s namesake lake. Our day finishes with a short transfer to our comfortable resort hotel in Mojkovac.

Unique to the Ryder Walker program, we will spend our entire day on the Tara River, one of Europe’s most pristine and wild rivers. Also known as “Tear of Europe”, the Tara River represents the purest river, and the Tara Canyon the deepest on the continent! Our trip down on the water is a fun and definitely an adventurous way to get to our next hiking venue, the Durmitor National Park. The day ends with a short transfer to Žlapjak, where you will be accommodated at a stylish and comfortable four star hotel for the next two nights.

Our loop hike into the mysterious Durmitor mountains sets out from the famous Black Lake (Crno Jezero), one of eighteen lakes that dot the national park. We will head into the rugged and beautiful high terrain, with landscapes carved by ice and water, high above Żlapjak. Forty eight peaks soar to over 6,562 feet/2,000 meters, and you will be able to enjoy views of the highest peak, Bobotov Kuk (8,277 feet/2,523 meters). We will then return to our comfortable hotel in Żlapjak.

Today we shuttle to the Bay of Kotor, and hike in its vicinity. Your guide will pick a suitable lunch spot along the way to enjoy Montenegrin delicatessens. Weather permitting, the journey continues by boat where we will tour the bay. We’ll descend to Risan, the oldest town on the bay, dating to at least the 3rd century BC. We will pass medieval Perast, boasting 16 churches and 17 former grand palazzos, as well as the island “Gospa od Škrpjela” (Our Lady of the Rocks), which was constructed in the 15th century and houses a magnificent church. We then arrive in Kotor by boat and make our way to one of Montenegro’s leading boutique hotels to spend the night.

Today is an easy and rewarding hike. We begin on a well built, historic Austrian road that descends an easy-to-traverse trail leading us through beautiful meadows and pastures. This just may be your favorite day of the tour because it showcases spectacular views of Europe´s most southern Fjord – the Bay of Kotor. Before our drive down to the town of Budva, a small seaside village, we will stop in Cetinje, a former capital of Montenegro, to visit the historic 15 x 15 meters relief map of Montenegro. This one of a kind map was made by Austrians in the late 1900s. This map also gives the overview of the whole country, mountains and places we have been to. Our closing dinner takes place on the terrace of our hotel in the Old Town of Budva, overlooking the city walls and the Mediterranean Sea.

Depart by bus or private shuttle to Podgorica airport.
